Kingmaker - Session Three

Resuming their travels, the party traveled west to  continue their mapping expedition, crossing through the foothills.  Discussion turned towards rumors they had overheard about these lands with Jaelyn sharing a particularly timely one in regards to the original Taldan settlers having found gold in these hills.  Sure enough, the party came across a narrow crag leading deeper into caves in the hills.  Shiny flecks in the rocks were noted and a more detailed search confirmed that these caverns were indeed abandoned mines.  A valuable resource to be noted for later development.

The party continued west into the Narlmarches, surveying the woods where they originally discovered the Bandit encampment and making a more thorough sweep of the area.  With that complete they veered northeast, deeper into the woods.  As they traveled through the woods they began to run into strange instances – Sorry found a wet frog in his pocket with no idea how it got there while the party's evening meal somehow became flavored with so much pepper as to be almost inedible.  Discussing matters, the group concluded that they were likely being subjected to the tricks of local fey creatures.  Setting out an offering of some silver jewelry they had found along with wild berries gathered up, the party made contact with Tyg-Titter-Tut and Perlivash, a grig and faerie dragon who reside in the woods.  With the party taking the pranks with good humor and making a gift to these tiny, wild fey, the pair agreed to keep an eye out here in the northern reaches of the Narlmarches and let the group know of any interesting happenings.  They also provided warnings of a cruel trapper laying out excessive traps to the northwest.

With that warning in hand, the party continued their survey, taking time and care to avoid the traps, disarming and collecting them.  With so many animals killed or injured needlessly, the group decided to hunt down the rogue trapper, following his trails to the southwest.  Ultimately they discovered him dead, an apparent victim of one of his own traps — a deadfall that had apparently gone off prematurely, dropping heavy logs on the back of his skull.  With his gear in hand, the group slipped out of the forest to the northwest, surveying the open plains there before circling around the forest and once more returning to Oleg's.

Returning to the trading post, they were greeted by Kesten Garess who had their reward from the Swordlords on hand and ready to give to them.  Zeelex and Sorry immediately turned their attention to Kressle, checking in with her to see how she was doing and continue their personal mission to get the toughened bandit leader to flip on the Stag Lord.  The rest of the party discovered new inhabitants at the outpost – their competition.  Finally getting the chance to meet their foes face to face they were introduced to the collection of 5 – Yssra Morr, an apparent sorceress with strong ties to a noble house in Brevoy, Kinston Greylock, a heavily armored mercenary with a scarred face, Daedric Tothgarson, a cloaked half-orc with numerous, primitive holy icons about him, Cassia Verdun, a human hunter by all appearances, and Thordrak Rockscream, a rude and crude dwarf with a very big axe.

Taking the time to resupply, the party prepared to head out again, though not before Sorry attempted to use magic to influence Kressle, implanting thoughts in her mind while she slept.  Setting back out again, the group prepared to undertake another sweep, expanding their map and the secured lands around Oleg's, venturing to the extreme south east area of their charter.  Arriving near the Shrike River, Aaden informed the group of the stories he had heard of a nearby crossing, a bridge put up by a retired engineer from Brevoy by the name of Devin Nettles.  Wanting control of the crossing for himself, the Stag Lord had the man murdered, but apparently he returned, exacting a terrible toll on the bandits that had seized his bridge for themselves.  While not knowing if the story was true or not, Aaden did note that no bandit would go anywhere near the site any more.

Warning in hand and with a need to get across the Shrike River themselves to continue their survey the group found the old bridge, now in horrible shape and nearly unusable.  Still, they rang the little bronze bell still sitting by the bridge… and found that the stories were true.  Emerging from the water was a corpse, still carrying his pole arm.  Approaching the party, the undead creature gave them a choice – kill the Stag Lord and throw his body into the Shrike River… or take his place and become another of his victims.  The group decided to honor the request, and pledged to return to throw the Bandit King's body into the river once they had killed him.  Appeased. Devin Nettles' spirit retreated to the waters with one last warning.  If he is betrayed, he would hunt them down and make them pay.

Continuing their explorations, the party swept west, back into the foothills.  Mapping the region, they increasingly were drawn to the most obvious landmark in the region, a hundred foot tall sycamore tree that dominated the skyline.  As they neared, they detected the obvious presence of mites, and having been warned by their earlier encounter with the kobolds that the mites and kobolds were at war, they decided to try and deal with the infestation as a means of gaining peace with the kobolds.  Finding a narrow passage burrowed into the ground amongst the dying tree's roots, the party began to seek out the mites.  The small and hideous creatures proved little match to the party, their superior numbers not able to overwhelm the group and they and their pets were exterminated with only small difficulty - though Sorry nearly paid the price upon underestimating the threat posed by a giant tick.

The foray into the mite lair proved quite fruitful as the party also managed to rescue a kobold by the name of Mikmek who had nearly been tortured to death.  Freeing him, they also agreed to seek out an intricate ivory statuette of what he described as a bloated, winged kobold (actually a devil).  That two was recovered and the party set back out to the surface to learn more about the kobold tribe from their new, grateful companion…

Kingmaker - Session Two

With Kressle captured and secured, the party settled in at the now cleared out bandit camp for the night.  With the morning's dawning the group searched the camp and recovered some of the spoils that the bandits had taken from Oleg and others over the last several months.  With their first venture into the Green Belt successful, the party gathered up everything they could take and after retrieving a few more horses from the bandits, set back out for Oleg's Trading Post.

Stopping only long enough to retrieve their own mounts, the party made Oleg's by sunset that night at which point they secured Kressle in the stables.  With their return they also discovered that the trading post had some new residents.  A small contingent of soldiers under the command of a Lieutenant Kesten Garess had finally arrived to provide a little security to the only real outpost of civilization in the area.

The party began its efforts to interrogate the Bandit chief but the results were distinctly unimpressive at first.  Kressle proved to be difficult to crack, defiantly refusing to cooperating and angrily insisting that the Stag Lord would easily destroy these newest interlopers to the Stolen Lands.  However the party's interrogation was interrupted by a stranger who introduced himself as Aaden Baeyal.  Claiming to be a representative of the Swordlords, Aaden said that he had been spying on the Stag Lord's bandits for the past several months and would be happy to share what he knew as it appeared that the party was the best chance he'd seen to bring the brigands down.

Providing them with a map that revealed that the Stag Lord had set up his camp in the ruins of an abandoned monastery at the head of Tuskwater Lake, he also alerted them to a number of other threats including a tribe of kobolds that dominated the central Green Belt.  The party also had their attention turned to a number of postings that had been made on the bulletin board that Oleg had setup at the Post.  A number of possibilities were raised for the party to pursing while they continued to map out their territory including:

  • Gathering Fangberries for Crazy Old Bokken, an alchemist living out in the wilds several miles from Oleg's.  He offered the opportunity to buy numerous potions at a discount as a reward.
  • Deal with the Kobolds by way of violence or diplomacy.  The Swordlords have committed to providing a 800gp reward for anyone that can bring Kobold activity under control.
  • Gather Moon Radishes for Svetlana Levaton.  The wife of Oleg is prepared to reward anyone who can provide her a stockpile of moon radishes with a 250gp reward.
  • Returning Svetlana's ring to Oleg.  Oleg has promised 1000gp in store credit to anyone who managed to return his wife's wedding ring to him.
  • Bring the bandit problem under control in the Northern Greenbelt.  The Swordlords have promised a 400gp reward to anyone who provides proof that they have slain or captured 6 bandits.  (As the party has already accomplished this, Kesten Garess has already sent work back to Restov to have the party's reward delivered)
  • Capture Falgrim Sneeg.  Kesten Garess has posted a request to capture an old colleague of his who has turned to banditry.  He is offering any four masterwork weapons for the capture of his old acquaintance.  He is willing to provide two masterwork weapons should Sneeg be killed instead of captured.
  • An intact Tatzlwyrm head.  A rare and dangerous creature, Oleg is willing to pay 600gp for the head of one of these creatures to mount in his trading post.
  • The body of Tuskgutter, a massive wild boar.  A local hunter who was maimed by the wild pig, Vekkel Benzen has offered 6 +1 animal bane arrows and his masterwork longbow to anyone who can bring him the corpse of Tuskgutter.

With all of these many opportunities presented to them, the party decided to begin the process of fulfilling their charter to map their new territory.  Starting out to the west of Oleg's the decision was to slowly work out in expanding half-circles from the outpost, moving deeper and deeper into the Green Belt until it was secured and they could finally turn their attention to the Stag Lord.  Traveling for several days, the party did finally come across the patch of Moon Radishes that Svetlana was so interested in.  Unfortunately they found a number of gorged Kobold's present.  The beasts were unwilling to give up the prize and after a period of trying to reason with them, the beastly creatures attacked, forcing the party to exterminate them to claim the remaining radishes.

With their first prize in hand, the group returned to Oleg's and were greeted with Svetlana's gratitude for their efforts.  Back at their main camp, both Sorry and Zeelax continued with efforts to win over the captive Kressle who remained stubborn but perhaps showed some cracks.  Though Veli slicing off her ear likely did not help, despite the quick action to heal her by the rest of the party.

The group also met another newcomer to the post, Jhod Kevken.  A priest of Erastil, he claimed to have had visions of a lost temple to his god somewhere in the Narlmarches.  Claiming it was being guarded by a tormented giant bear, he asked the party to keep an eye out for it if they could and to do what they could to bring peace to the tormented guardian.

As the party prepared to set out once more, Aaden offered to accompany them, pointing out his skills as a mapmaker, and his many other gifts including extensive entertaining talents.  While some of the group had some suspicions, ultimately the party decided to take the one time spy along as they headed back into the wilds.

Continuing to expand the map of the territory in their charter, the group came across a large cavern.  Venturing in, they discovered a number of giant spiders that attempted to make them their next meal.  While they proved a little troublesome the party quickly dispatched them and discovering the long since deceased body of a bandit they also recovered a crude map that seemed to indicate that there was treasure buried beneath a unique tree who's branches seemed to arch upwards like a clawed hand.

Continuing on their way, the party dropped in on the wild hermit alchemist Bokken, getting more details about his request for Fangberries, discovering that they would likely be found in the southern foothills just north of Lake Tuskwater.

Again the party resumed their mission, making their way south of the Spider Caves.  While charting the region the group stumbled across that strange claw-looking tree and digging about it's roots revealed a stolen cache that they added to their spoils.  Resting for the night, the group prepared to continue their exploration of the Green Belt on the following morn…

Kingmaker - Session One

The adventure opened up in the City of Restov, the southern-most city in the nation of Brevoy and the former capital of Rostland before its conquest two centuries earlier.  The party's request to be considered for one of the charters being issued to explore the Stolen Lands to the south of Brevoy has apparently been accepted and the group is summoned to the imposing city hall to meet with the Lord-Mayor of Restov, Ioseph Sellemius.

At the meeting the Lord-Mayor congratulates the party on their being accepted for this task, but also lets them know that in the interest of insuring the best outcome for the people of the Stolen Lands, the decision was to allow a second group to compete to map and bring order to the southern lands.  This second party appears rather dismissive of their opposition and numbers five individuals, apparently led by a beautiful red-haired woman.  With that out of the way, the Lord-Mayor informs the group that their charter is for the Green Belt, one of the central areas of the Stolen Land and an area overrun with bandit activity.  They are to map out the lands, deal with the bandits and overcome any other obstacles — such as hostile fey or a rumored Kobold Tribe.  Should they be  the first successful claimants, they will be granted a further charter to begin colonizing these new lands.

With charter in hand, the group oversaw their last minute preparations, setting out on Starday, 2nd of Gozran for Oleg's Trading Post, the sole hint of civilization within the Green Belt.  The trip along the South Rostland Road went smoothly, the group arriving around midday of the 3rd of Gozran and met Oleg and Svetlana Levaton, the proprietors  of the Trading Post.  Initially fearful of the group, in particular because of Zeelax and Apep, the two are eventually convinced to emerge.  Oleg was far less welcoming of the group then his wife, and in particular seemed frustrated that his reports of constant bandit raids on his establishment had not been provided to the party.  Svetlana was more concerned with obtaining their help going forward and when the party agreed to hold off beginning the exploration of their chartered territory until after the bandit threat was dealt with, both her and her husband seemed much relieved.

The party began laying out preparations for the bandits expected arrival the next day, setting up an ambush for the unsuspecting brigands and when the morning dawned, the ambush was executed to perfection, the brigands lured into the confines of the Trading Post's courtyard where they were slaughtered almost to the man.  A single surviving bandit fearfully gave up all he knew, directing the party towards the bandit camp a mere twenty miles away or so to the southwest, along the Thorn River in the northern-most reaches of Narlmarches.

Setting out under a howling thunderstorm, the group's trackers were able to find the tracks of the bandits despite the inclement weather, picking out a trail that took them south over the plains of the Greenbelt, skirting the woods of the Narlmarches to the West.  Reaching the Thorn River by late afternoon, the group tethered their horses and began the trek into the woods in the increasing dark.  By midnight they managed to discover the bandit camp, setting upon it ruthlessly.  A dozen bandits were met and brought low with surprising efficiency in the dark, arrows flying back and forth as shadowed shapes clashed with sword, axe and lance among the flickering flames of the encampment's fire.  By the end of the fight ten bandits lay dead, one had fled and the leader of the bandits, a fearless woman who was only identified by the name of Kressle had been captured…

So it begins

So today we have arrived at Oleg's trading post. Oleg is apparently a human who set up some sort of trade post in an area strife with bandits and heretics. Why. I do not know.

My companions are all humans. Some stranger than others. One has a very odd skin colour and long teeth. Maybe some form of disease. The others do not seem to mind. So it may not be contagious or harmful. She is rather quiet and also seem to prefer violence as a form of diplomacy. The there is the human with sharp ears. Self inflicted. Birth defect or magic gone awry I do not know. He has a large feline with him. A lion he calls her. Not like any lion i have seen. One human seems to lack any sort of physical prowess, But it seems their power comes from the gods. I will have to see how this human benefits our group. Divine power must be respected and feared. Then there is the bowman. He appears to be very competent with his chosen weapon. Time will tell how he interacts with us. The last of our group is still a enigma to me. Our interactions have been very limited. I hope to establish who he is with time

This outpost that is run by Oleg is quite run down. It seems that there is no pride in their workman ship. The land of the Great Pharoas casts this land in shame.

We were met with scepticism but it was soon made clear why. Bandits pillage this area once a month and we were asked to help save them from the next raid. We complied and set up an ambush for the next day. The battle was over before it started. They did not expect it. And Apep easily captured one we interrogated. It was revealed about a close by base of operations led by a female bandit called Kessel. We all agreed to try and take the camp as soon as possible

With the extra horses acquired from the defeated bandits, We set out to their encampment. It was an easy trip. Once near their camp. The horses were tied doen and we entered the woods. Apep and myself chose to use the river, while the rest travelled through the woods.

We eventually reached their camp. We tried to eliminate the watch before an alarm could be raised, But due to the storm and lack of light. We failed. The battle was rather gritty. Mud. Rain. Dirt and blood. I eventually faced off against the woman named Kessel. I could not subdue her as planned. My training was lacks in dealing non lethal damage to targets. Eventually, with the help of the odd coloured human, she was able to knock the human out. Now captured and our wounds licked. We now face the future of what to do with her. I have my ideas. I hope our new companions allow my wish

Ps. Rain. This place has so much water. The gods have really blessed this place with water. When the skies cry, they weep. All praise to the gods for supplying us with such an abundant and rich land!
